Tips for dealing with problem gamblers

Look after yourself first:

  • protect and secure your finances
  • seek professional advice and emotional support

Don't rescue:

  • don't lend the gambler money - you'll just be supporting the gambling
  • offer support but don't take responsbility away from them

Don't criticise:

  • talk calmly about how the gambling affects you, not about how they have hurt you
  • ask them if they are happy with what they are doing - show sincere concern
  • offer support, not harrassment

Be realistic:

  • know your limits - you may not be able to support this person
  • again, seek professional advice and support
